That would do the job, although to my naïve non-programmer brain it sounds a lot simpler (both to implement and to use) just to add an additional status! Maybe your idea has additional benefits though for archiving and the like...

What about a way to export the check for reimport after the server is
back up?  This will allow you to delete it but to have an archive of the
check setup including alerts and such.
