You don't even get to the point of the authentication, it looks like you're
not even able to connect to the SMTP server.
Did you configure a fixed smtp server or did you enable direct send?
If it's a fixed SMTP server then try
(from a command prompt)
TELNET <smtp-server> 25
Does that work?

I'm using Servers Alive 5.0.1748 on Windows 2000, SP4, all patches.
I hope this is enough information for you.
I have furtherinformations from the freemailer which authentication they
want. Is this necessary ?

the logging level was "minimum".
