it seems you are right, Dirk.
I tried for all three mailservers telnet hostname 25, but didn't get any 
connection.

For all three i entered a host name, and "send direct" had NO check mark.

You don't even get to the point of the authentication, it looks like you're not 
even able to connect to the SMTP server.

Did you configure a fixed smtp server or did you enable direct send? If it's a 
fixed SMTP server then try
        

(from a command prompt)
                TELNET <smtp-server> 25
Does that work?
