TNSPing will simplt tell you if the listener is up-and-running, while the db
login will actualy tell you if you can login into the given db.

I've asked our DBAs if TNSPing is sufficient to tell if the database is up
and running, or if an established database connection would be better.
Without doing some testing, they can't remember, but think there are a
couple possible situations where TNSPing will succeed but the database isn't
in a usable state.

Question for those of you that are using Oracle.

Currently Servers Alive is able to do an Oracle check by using the Oracle
OLE objects and doing a login to the Oracle db.
Do you get situations were doing a login is too much/not accepted and that a
TNSPing would be better?
