No worries, Dirk I don't suppose you have a debug version of salive up your
sleeve to pin point what function is causing this?
Are these servers victims of stringent Group Policy settings? Is there
anything in your eventlog to indicate failures?
The real cause for concern is that salive uses so many system calls it pulls in
lots of modules and is likely that the cause is with one of those e.g. on my

Hi Mark,
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
1) I didn’t run your command but I did run a tasklist for all users
and serversalive.exe running as SYSTEM is the culprit at 100%, no other SA
processes are running.
2) Yes, telephony service is running – this is where I should have
paid more attention to previous discussions?
3) The box also hosts SQL 2000 SP4 and Openfire (an XMPP/Jabber server)

1. Did you run the tasklist commands ?
The reason I put those in is that it might show that a rouge serversalive
process running under another users context e.g. another admin running the app
by mistake.
2. Also I know it is always said but is the telephony service running, I can't
remember if any previous posts mentioned this and it isn't in this mail thread
(see below).
3. What other services does this box host that is common to both servers
having this issue (presumably you arn't dedicating them to SA)?
I'll think of other stuff later, I'm up to my eyes... ;0)

The TS session logs off and disconnects cleanly and when the CPU is maxed out
it’s serversalive.exe using 100%

1. When you log off have you tried checking the server to see if the ts
session has logged off properly, with either ts manager or the query session
commands?
2. Can you confirm that it is the salive.exe process specifically?
3. What is the output of (from a non console session during the CPU 100%
issue):
tasklist /V /FI "SERVICES eq salive"
tasklist /V /FI "IMAGENAME eq serversalive.exe"

If I log off with the SA window open AND with SA idle (not checking) the
problem is still there.

I’m connecting with the /console option (the SA icon doesn’t appear
when it’s running as a service and you don’t connect to the
console)

But when you RDP in to the server are you doing so as /console or just a
virtual/terminal session? So long as only one instance is spawned in total you
should be okay, but it requires a direct or console connect - if you remote in
to a virtual desktop it can cause problems.
Other than that my v6 and now 6.1 as of earlier this week do not exhibit the
same issue, although I am not running on a server OS yet for my main SA
machine.

No, I mean when I log in and SA is running as a service, the SA logo is
displayed in the system tray automatically in the bottom right of the
screen. So when I double click on it I'm accessing the currently running
SA service. I'm NOT running it again from the Start Menu.
The SA service logs in as LocalSystem and is allowed to interact with
the desktop.
