The border has black and white colors during sync pulse detecting. As soon as the pulse is detected the colors turn to cyan/read (as with the speccy). When it stays black and white try turning Volume up and fiddle a bit with the tone/equalizer button(s) if you use a mono tapelead with a stereo deck you might try to plug the jackplug halfway in.
