Hi Frans.
I use as Robert also Photoshop, mostly 4.0 (it`s the fastest to run...).
However, I didn´t split a picture into RGB channels, I use the cut
function predefined to 256x192 pixel AND 192 pixel resolution. If
needed, you can omnit one of the values width or high, but then you need
to "Canvas size".
I save the picture then as BMP (!), not interested how many colours it
has and open Paint Shop Pro. Then I use the colour reduce function. Down
to 256 colours works mostly fine. Further I go down step by step (reduce
to "X-colours") 128, 64, 32 and finally 16 (or values in between). It´s
about your taste if you try it with "Windows/Safe colors", "Optimised
Octree" or "Optimised Median Cut". If you are satisfy save it again.
The rest is as Robert mentioned: Use Edwin Blinks Screenviewer, drag and
drop it into and save it as .dsk file. With Samdisk (I know, I know) you
can port it to the SAM.
With Flash (!) you can handle the RGB values if necessary. As I often do
greyscales, I have no problems, and colours are also mostly proper.
I guess there is no "best resolution" for your problem, so do like I:
try!
To Robert: Right, your site doesn´t work since years correctly under
Netscape ;-)
And to all: Visit our 2nd International Spectrum and SAM meeting in
Stein/Urmond (Netherland) on 27/28 April 2002. More information you find

That´s the plot.
