Mode 1 is slowest (deliberately so; this mode was only intended for Spectrum compatibility, so the ASIC attempts to slow the Z80 down a bit until it is approximately the same speed as in the Spectrum). Modes 2, 3 and 4 all have the same contention unless the screen is turned off. Andrew
