The latter: I can't see the server at all from a Windows (XP or Vista)
client, yet it's certainly visible and its printers readily available to
any GNU/Linux systems in the network.  Some people have reported that a
registry key
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel)
needs to be set to 1.  I did that, rebooted Windows, but nothing
changed.  I also turned off the firewall in Windows to no avail.  Quite
frustrating.

How are you trying to connect to the samba server from windows?
