Dear all, I am wondering what the actual differences between SAM/BAM format versions (as specified in the VN field of the header are. What kind of assumptions can be made if VN is 1.5, 1.4 or an earlier version. Are the versions backwards compatible, i.e., when, for example, VN is set to 1.5 for a file that actually complies to 1.4, could that cause problems ? Is there something like a What's New file accompanying new versions ? Searching for an answer to these questions made me discover a previous thread on the developer list (https://sourceforge.net/p/samtools/mailman/message/28539466/), but it is rather old. So what is the current status?
