Gentoo currently does not provide a newer version than 1.0.27-r3.
I have put together a gentoo overlay for sane-backends with version
1.0.28. Can you test this?

Note: the 1.0.28 ebuild builds for me locally, but I have not had time
to test it properly (and I have limited access to scanners to test
