I followed the installation instructions in your "README.md" file, first
created file "/etc/portage/repos.conf/sane-overlay.conf", and then ran
the command "emaint sync -r sane-overlay". However this command seemed
to run in an endless loop:
I've emailed Rainer off-list and sorted out his gentoo specific issues
with this.

From his original email, his scanner was working with Ubuntu 16.04 and
sane backends 1.0.28+git20190831 from a PPA.
Rainer can you try now with the sane-backends-9999.ebuild, which will
install the current git version of the backends. I'm hopeful that having
something at least as recent as the known working version may work out
for you.
I guess the erroneousĀ behaviour referenced below is not a fair
comparison, unless you know that the 1.0.28 release version also worked
on ubuntu?
$ scanimage --version
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.28; backend version 1.0.28
$ scanimage '--batch=.%03d0.png' --batch-increment 1 --batch-print
--batch-start 1 --device pixma:MX880_new-host --source 'Automatic Document
Feeder' --format png --mode Color --resolution 300 -l 3 -t 0 -x 210 -y 297
Scanning infinity pages, incrementing by 1, numbering from 1
Scanning page 1
Scanned page 1. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 2
scanimage: sane_read: Document feeder out of documents
Scanned page 2. (scanner status = 7)
Batch terminated, 2 pages scanned
$
But the document feeder wasn't out of documents, the scanner was busy,
and it's WiFi LED was blinking forever. I had to switch the scanner
off.
So I think I need some instructions for debugging "scanimage". Anybody?
