Here are the permissions on the relevant devices: crw-rw-rw- 1 bhepple disk 21, 2 Jan 9 08:19 /dev/sg2 crw-rw-rw- 1 bhepple disk 21, 3 Jan 9 08:19 /dev/sg3 - I changed them to be owned by me, "just in case". I created those device files by MKDEV rather than by using sysfs/udev so it's possible that there's something amiss there - I am still in the process of moving from devfs to full sysfs and the next step is for me to remove all the old /dev files and let sysfs/udev take care of it for me. I expect chaos will reign for a while - but I don't seriously suspect that of being my current problem.
