One more piece of information that may give someone an idea of what might be going on ... I put gdb on the sane/xsane source and found that the line xsane-back-gtk.c:192: status = sane_control_option(handle, option, action, val, info); ... returns SANE_STATUS_DEVICE_BUSY I can't debug further (into the dll backend) because gdb reports: warning: Unable to find dynamic linker breakpoint function. GDB will be unable to debug shared library initializers and track explicitly loaded dynamic code.
