Thanks for replying. I've installed SANE about two weeks ago by downloading the
source files from
ftp.de.debian.org/debian
This is a recent SANE version (1.0.20.1). Is this version broken? everything
seems to work fine (except that it generates blank images).
Are there any tweaks/settings to play with to try and get it working with the
Scanjet 4400C? is there a way to check if if the sensor in the scanner is the
one SANE supports?.

you had the bad luck to get one with the wrong sensor. In this case the chances
are poor to get it running.
Another point is that you are obviously running under debian. Out of any reason
the SANE .deb-packages seem to be broken now and again. So you might exchange
it with packages from the SANE server (it's a ./configure ./make
../make install installation) and see what's going on then.
