Thanks for Wolfran and Triften for helpful suggestions? regarding the HP
Scanjet 4400c.
With the rts8891 backend it is now working but apparently only in 75, 300 and
600 dpi modes. The default mode of 150 dpi? produces a blank image while the
1200dpi mode produces only half of page (the 2nd half is black).
In summary, this produces a proper 300dpi grayscale scan:
scanimage -d rts8891 --mode Gray --resolution 300 > o.pnm
