Be remote/jealous!  Be adamant!  Cease to be direct with your lover!'

Thus admonished by her friend, she answered her with a face full of fear:

'praise [him] in vile [words; i.e., praise him even while you censure me]:
for shall the lord of my life not hear, abiding in my heart as he is?'

 tathApi twaM mahAbaho naiva shochitumarhasi ||

anvayaH tathA padavicChedaH:
 hataH vA swargaM prApyasi jitwA vA mahIm bhokshyase |
 mahAbaho na api eva tathA shochitum arhasi ||

pratipadArthaH:
 hataH       = dead
 vA          = also, or (here, it means if)
 swargaM     = heaven
 prApyasi   = will get
 jitwA       = won
 mahIM       = the earth
 bhokshyase  = will relish (will utilize)
 mahabAho    = oh! the man with powerful arms
 na          = no, not
 api         = also
 eva         = again
 tathA       = like this, thus
 shochitum   = to lament
 arhasi      = is eligible

tAtparyaH:
 If you are dead, you attain a place in heaven(swarga), if you have own you
relish the earth (by ruling)
 Oh! the man with powerful arms (Arjuna), thus you are not eligile to lament
eitherways.

Raghu adds:
 Though, the above verse is was uttered by Lord Krishna in the battlefiled
of Kurukshetra, when Arjuna,
 overwhelmed with emotions decided not to fight, this can be alluded to
practical ways of life.
 In the game of life, many a time one has to take chances and take calls as
well.
 If the choice is correct, once reaps the fruit of efforts. If wrong, the
person learns from mistakes.
 Thus, every decisioncan be a learning process and one should not hesitate
or give up..
 Very practical, right??

Grammar:
 prApyasi =  lat lakAre madhyama purushe ekavachanaH
 tathA + api = savarNa dIrgha sandhiH
 na + eva    = vR^iddhi sandhiH

 In sanskrit, 10 tenses are defined. They are called 'lakArA's.
 There is a verse, which beautifully puts these lakArAs and when they are
used. The verse goes as below

 verse:
 lat vartamAne leT vede bhUte lu~N la~N liTastathA |
 vidyAshishostu li~N loTau lR^i~N lR^uTaU lR^it bhavishyati ||

 the 10 tenses are
  lat - present tense
  leT - used mostly in 'vedA's
  lu~N, la~N, liT  - past tense
  li~N, loT - while teaching, blessings and bestowals
  lR^i~N, lR^uT, lR^iT - in future tense.

(I may be wrong in some of the spellings; but, the verse seems to be OK)

 pramANam    - vouches for, stands by
 kurute      - does
 lokaH       - world
 anuvartate  - will follow

tAtparyaH:
 Whatever a paragon of virtues performs/acts/does, other people do the same.
 Whatever he vouches for, the world will follow suit.
