Namaste,
A person I know on the net is interested in conducting a sanskrit quiz. I am
hoping he will be able to mail his quizzes on this mailing list. He has a
concern which I would like to clarify with the members in this group. He
wants to know if members on this list insist that he use the "itrans" or
"harvard-kyoto" type notations?
If the use of "itrans" or "harvard-kyoto" type notations is not insisted, he
will be able to contribute to this group, which will make this more lively.

Can anybody answer this?
Thanks,
Ameet

He is welcome to mail his quiz here.
Though there is no rule here that stuff should be posted only in ITRANS,
there is a genuine reason to use a fixed convention like ITRANS for
writing sanskrit mails in english alphabet. His using well-established
convention such as ITRANS allows us pronounce sanskrit by reading its
transliterated form, and avoid guess work.

namaste, the quiz would certainly make, for example, leaning Sanskrit, and
all group activities in general, more interesting.
It is customary not to insist on any particular transliteration mode
(ITRANS/Kyoto and many, many more.)
However, for sustained and consistent ease of activity and response to the
activity, it is a good idea for the quiz creator to pick up ITRANS. It is
not proper to reject anything without first really trying it. There are
crossword puzzle softwares but they will accept only ITRANS. This is because
ITRANS has no diacritical marks and signs. Further, many of the
participants, I presume, will already be familiar with ITRANS. The final
choice is, of course, with the conductor of the quiz activity.
