analaH = fire.

Today I heard why fire is called 'analaH' during a swamiji's bhagavadgita 
discourse recording.
Apparently,
analaM = na alam
alam = enough.
analaM = not enough.
However much food (things that burn) you provide to fire, it goes on
consuming it. To fire, there is no concept called 'enough'.
Hence fire is called 'analaH'.

WHAT IS THE LOGIC BEHIND THE CONCEPT OF vibhAshhA ?

This question refers to pANini's grammar. In many
sUtra translations and vR^ittis the word vibhAshhA is
sometimes explained as "vA", i.e., merely "option". I
doubt that pANini would use a wastefully long word
like "vibhAshhA" unless it meant something different
than the brief "vA". Indeed from "1.1.44 na veti
vibhAshhA . " we know that it means "na vA" i.e.,
"optional denial" (or is it "option and denial"? See
below). 

What is the logical distinction between an optional
assertion and an optional denial? What difference
would it make to our understanding of sarvanAmas if in
1.1.28:
diksamAse bahuvrIhau (sarvAdIni) vA (sarvanAmAni)
[adapted from the laghukaumudI]
instead of:
diksamAse bahuvrIhau (sarvAdIni) na vA (sarvanAmAni)
[using pANini's definition of vibhAshhA]
?

I must sheepishly confess that I am missing something
VERY basic here. I don't know if the following is a
clue or a red herring:
The laghukaumudI says "nishhedhvikalpayoH vibhAshA iti
saMGYA syAt.h" for 1.1.44. Based on the "iti" in the
actual sUtra 1.1.44, which is pANini's way of putting
quotation marks around "na vA", I would have said
"nishhedhavikalpasya ..." i.e., nishhedhasya vikalpaH
= nishhedhavikalpaH, tasya
instead of varadarAja's "nishhedhashcha vikalpashcha =
nishhedhvikalpau, tayoH"
Not that I understand it anyway...

This question of the logical significance of
"vibhAshhA" has bothered me for long. I hope some of
the group members may be able to answer me.
