Wealth falls in love with the one who carefully considers his course of action before
acting.
2. shariiramaadyaM khalu dharma saadhanam
Body is the first among the performers of duty.
3. yatraak^Rtistatra guNaa bhavanti
Where there is beauty, charm too (usually) goes with it.
4. lajjaamEkam parityajya trilokE vijayii bhavEt
Leaving shyness (diffidence) behind leads one to succeed in all the three worlds.
5. priyaagamanavELaayaam manDayatii muhurmuhuH kELiig^Rhaantadhaatmaanam
saasyaadvaasavasajjikaa.
One (the girl) who deliberately decorates the bedroom slowly (giving attention to
detail) is (known as) "vasavasajjika" (one of the classical heroines, others being
virahotkanThita, abhisaarika, vipralabdha, etc.).
6. anukuulaaM, vimalaangiiM,
kulajaaM kushalaaM sushiila saMpannaaM,
pancha lakaaraaM bhaaryaaM
purushhaH puNyodayaallabhatE
One who is easy to get along with, one with clean lines in limbs (figure), one with a
good family backround, one who is pleasant/relaxed, and one who is of good character -
a man gets a wife with these five qualities because of some good deeds (punya) he had
done in the past. The fun thing in this verse is the <b>l</b>'s - anukuu<b>la</b>aM,
vima<b>la</b>angiim, ku<b>la</b>jaam, sushi<b>la</b> saMpannaM; and the verse says - a
wife with these five <b>l</b>'s (pancha lakaaraaM bhaaryaaM) is hard to get.
7. vaarijEnEva sarasii shashinEva nishiidhinii
yauvanEnEva vanitaa nayEna shriirmanoharaa
Lotuses to a lake, moon to a night, youth to a woman, principles to a rich man are
nice (enhance their being).
8. shiirshhE sarpo, dEshaantarE vaidyaH
A snake on top of the head, and the doctor far away!
9. The following are four nyayaas in Sanskrit. What is the inner meaning in each one?
(a) taaLaarohaNa nyaayam
(b) madhumakshikaa nyaayam
(c) maarjaalakishora nyaayam
(d) maNisuutra nyaayam
(a) When someone is trying to climb up a tall palm tree (taaLaarohaNam), you can only
push him/support him so far. Beyond that point, he can go up only by his own effort.
Similarly,...
(b) Bees go through all that hard work to make honey for others (humans, us, that is).
Similarly,....
(c) There are two interpretations of this. It's about how a cat treats its kitten. One
interpretation is - A cat carefully holds is kitten in its mouth to transport them
safe areas; similarly, God takes care of us. The other interpretation is - a cat
doesn't feed its kitten; she only teaches them how to hunt and kill; the rest is up to
them; similarly, God can only show you the way, the rest is up to you.
(d) maNisuutra nyayam is about how close and inseparable some relatives are
(husband-wife, parents-children, brothers-sisters, etc. When a string is used to
string through beads/pearls/corals or other things, the string and those that are
strung are inseparable. I hope I am making sense.
10. sarvEshhaam svastirbhavatu

give a serial number and fix a time limit upto which
