Meanings?
1. v^RNutEhi vimR^shyakaariNam guNalubdhaassvayamEpa saMpadaH
= sampadaah gunalubdhaah vimrisyakarinan
swayameva vrinuthe hi. Virtuous fortune seeks of its own accord those who
act after due discrimination.
2. shariiramaadyaM khalu dharma saadhanam
= body is the first requirement for doing what is just. (health is wealth)
3. yatraak^Rtistatra guNaa bhavanti
= wherever there is good figure or appearance there will be good qualities.
4. lajjaamEkam parityajya trilokE vijayii bhavEt
= One who goes about without shame will succeed in the three worlds.
5. priyaagamanavELaayaam manDayatii muhurmuhuH
kELiig^Rhaantadhaatmaanam saasyaadvaasavasajjikaa.
First I wish to point out some spelling mistakes in the sloka.
(1)Probably manDayatii should be maNDaayati.
(2) In the second part dhaatmaanam should be daatmaanam.
Now the meaning:
= She is called a vaasavasajjikaa who at the expected time of arrival of her
lover decorates herself over and over again inside her private chamber
or pleasure house.
6. anukuulaaM, vimalaangiiM,
: kulajaaM kushalaaM sushiila saMpannaaM,
: pancha lakaaraaM bhaaryaaM
: purushhaH puNyodayaallabhatE
= One is fortunate to get a wife with five lakaras : anukuulaam - friendly,
vimalaangiiM - without any blemish in any limb, Kulajaam = born in a high
family, Kushalaam - skillfull, sushiilasampannam = with good behavior.
7. vaarijEnEva sarasii shashinEva nishiidhinii
yauvanEnEva vanitaa nayEna shriirmanoharaa
= Wealth accompanied by (good) conduct is enchanting like the pond with
the lotus, the night with the moon, and a woman with youth.
8. shiirshhE sarpo, dEshaantarE vaidyaH
= The serpent is on the head but the Doctor is in another country.
9. The following are four nyayaas in Sanskrit. What is the inner
meaning of each one?
(a) taaLaarohaNa nyaayam
(b) madhumakshikaa nyaayam
(c) maarjaalakishora nyaayam
(d) maNisuutra nyaayam
(a) (b) and (d) pass.
(c) marjarakishora nyayam = In the Viashnava philosophy of Bhakthi there are two
schools - one is the southern school which is denoted by marjarakisora nyayam,
meaning that god will pick up the devotee as a cat will pick up the kitten to give
him salvation. The other is the northern school which quotes the markatakishora
nyaya meaning that the devotee should cling to god as the baby monkey clings to its
mother's belly for getting transported.
10. sarvEshhaam svastirbhavatu = Hail everyone.
