1. shhatkarNO bhidyatE mantraH

If six ears (i.e., three people) know about a secret, it will be destroyed, i.e., it 
will be a secret no more.

2. saaraLyam saraLe kuryaat, shaThE shaaThyam samaacharEt

Be nice to nice people, and be rude to rude people.

3. suputraH saptamO rasaH

A good son is like a seventh rasa (there are six rasas in food).

4. sthaana sthitaH kaapurushOpi simhaH

Even a lowly man (a meek guy) will be a lion if he is on his own ground (home ground).

5. dhanakshayE vardhati jaaTharaagniH

As one loses money and gets poorer, his hunger for food increases.

6. t^RnairvirachyatErajjur bhadyamtE tEna damtinaH

Simple hay made into a rope ties up an elephant.

7. niriikshatE kELivanam pravishya kramElakaH kamTakajaalamEva

A camel entering a love garden (with beautiful bushes, flowers, etc.) looks only for 
thorn bushes (the type he is used to in the desert)

8. nahi maru mariichi sarasii kramashaH shushhyati.

Water in a mirage in a desert (maru-bhoomi) never dries up gradually (It just 
disappears in an instant). Similarly when "jgnana" hits you, "ajgnana" simply 
disappers in an instant (not gradually).

: 9. Inner meaning for the following two nyayas?

: (a) saudha-sOpAna nyaayam;

To get to the top of the palace (high station in life) the only way is to climb one 
step at a time (no elevators in those days).

: (b) sthaalii-pulaaka nyaayam.

You can tell if a pot full of rice is cooked by testing just one rice grain. Similarly 
you can tell if a student is fully ready to face the world, or if a person is worth to 
be your friend, or if a person deserves your respect, by one simple act or simple 
conversation.

: Meanings for the shlokas:

: 10. aapadaam apahartaaram daataaram sarvasampadaam
: lokaabhiraamam shriiraamam bhuuyO bhuuyO namaamyaham

aapadaam = dangers
apahartaaram = remover
daataram = giver, one who grants
sarvasampadaam = all types of wealth
lokaabhiraamam = one who pleases everyone
shriiraamam = to Shree Rama
bhuyo bhuyo = repeatedly
namaamyaham = I bow

I bow again and again to Shree Rama who removes dangers and grants all wealth and who 
pleases everyone.

We are taught as children to say this little prayer whenever we pick up a sacred book 
to read. I don't understand what "danger" is there in reading a sacred book. Could it 
be the danger of misinterpretation? If someone would throw some light on it I would 
appreciate. 

: 11. yatra yatra raghunaatha kiirtanam
: tatra tatra kR^ita mastakaajalim
: baashhpa vaari paripuurNa lOchanam
: maarutir namata raakshasaantakam

I am sorry I made a mistake on the last line - it is maarutim, not maarutir.

I bow to Hanuman, the slayer of demons, who is 
present with folded hands raised to his head, his eyes brimming with tears of joy, 
wherever the name of Shree Rama is uttered with devotion.


: 12. mEghair mEduram ambaram vana-bhuvaH shyaamaas tamaala drumair
: naktam bhiirur ayam tvam eva tad imam raadhE gR^iham praapaya
: ittham nanda-nideshatash chalitayoH pratyadhva kunjadrumam
: raadhaa-maadhavayOr jayanti yamunaa kuule rahaH keLayaH
: (the first verse in Gita-Govindam)

raadhe = hey! Raadha 
ambaram+mEghaiH+ mEduram = sky is thick with clouds
vana+bhuvaH= wooded areas
shyaamaaH= are darkened (blackened) 
tamaala+ drumaiH = with Tamaala trees 
naktam = night (is also drawing) 
bhiiruH+ayam = innocently, naively scared, that one (Krishna) is
tat = for that reason 
tvam + eva= you alone 
imam + gR^iham + praapaya = him, to home, see he reaches 
ittham + nanda+ nideshitaH = this way, by Nanda, she who is instructed/ordered 
[Raadha] 
chalitayoH = while the two (Radha & Krishna) are on the go (homebound) 
raadhaa + maadhavayoH = Raadha & Krishna 
yamunaa + kuule = on the banks of Yamuna 
prati= each, at each and every 
adhva = pathway 
kunja + drumam = in garden, at tree 
rahaH + kelayaH= sequestered plays of passion 
jayanti = won over

"He! Raadha, clouds are thickening in the sky, black Tamaala trees blacken the wooded 
areas, and night is also drawing ... and that one is innocently scared... therefore, 
you alone please lead him home..." this way when Nanda ordered Raadha, (Radha meets up 
with Krishna) and both Raadha and Krishna are on the go homeward, and then the 
happenstances of their sequestered plays of passion, on each pathway, at every tree, 
and in each and every garden on the banks of river Yamuna just won over (just happened 
naturally as if pre-ordained). 

I tried, I can't do any better with my limited abilities. The original is simply too 
beautiful.
