Respected Learned members of the group,
praNaamaaH
I have a question about anuswa:ram -
How can I find out, a particular syllable is purNa anuswa:ram as in ubhaya aksharam
(aM, aH) or it is the pollu of 'ma' kaaram ?
For example, in OM - it is ma kaaram and not pu:rNa anusvaram
If we take say for instance this famous slokam,
vasudeva sutam devam kamsa chaNuura mardanam
--- --- --- ----
devakii paramaanandam kR^iShNam vande jagadgurum
----- ---- ----
which one of the underlined anuna:sika/anuswa:ra sounds can be actually written using
anusva:ram and which are other anuna:sikas like n/m etc.
Is there any rule which defines those ?
I appreciate if learned members can guide me
Regards,
BhavadiiyaH

In reply to the query on anusvaara I am reproducing the rules from a book on Sanskrit
grammar.
Let m be the anusvaara at the end of a word like raamam
ramm!, And M be the anuswaara which appears as small o on the top of a letter after
which it occurs..
Rule
a) If m is followed by a vowel it mixes with the vowel as in
ayam + aagataH = ayamaagataH.
b) if followed by sha, Sa, sa, ha, ra, m becomes M.
c) if followed by kavarga, chavarga, Tavarga, and tavarga
m changes to nasal of the respective varga. In pavarga it is already the nasal of
that varga.
(Note: However nowadays all such anusvaaras are written as M. But they are
pronounced as the respective nasal
sounds.)
E.G.written as shaMkara z<kr instead of sha~Nkara zr
d) If followed by ya, va, la it becomes anusvaara which is denoted by ardhachandra and
a dot on the top of the
letter after which it occurs. The letters are also doubled. e.g. ayam + vaTah
AyVvq> (here it is placed on the side)
The shloka quoted will be
vasudevasutaM devaM kaMsachaaNuuramardanam .
devakiiparamaanandaM kR^iShNaM vande jagadgurum ..
vsudevsut< dev< k<sca[UrmdRnm!,
devkIprmanNd< k:[< vNde jĝm!.
