seems to me to say something like this:
'Even an utterly worthless man who stood before the earth lord of mind bold in
giving, was not turned away: shall the cloud arising in the rainy season
deprive the barren field of its waters?'
I was at first utterly baffled by apaH; it seemed to me to have no syntactical
place in the verse, and I couldn't understand how Mallinatha, who glosses it
jalaani, of course (I hoped it might be a genitive singular, but he explains
from Panini why there is zaSThiipratiSedhah, 'prohibition of [the
interpretation of apaH here as] the genitive', I think), meant it to be
understood. But it seems that parihaaryam, and tyaajyam in Mallinatha, are
causative gerundives? So that the meaning would be, 'Is the barren field to be
caused to abandon the waters [that is, deprived of the waters] by the cloud'
(for Mallinatha explains, I think, how ambudasya here stands for ambudena, also
according to Panini). Does it look like I have understood this correctly?
