Except for a few vRttas, there is no logic in the names given
to the metres. A particular lAkshaNika wanted it that way.
that is all! That is why we have several names for the same
vRtta, e.g., paMcakaavali, dhRtaSree, SaSivadana, caMpakamaalika,
Sailanidhi, sarasi, siddhaka. This metre has been used by mAgha
in SiSupAlavadha. Another thing is, the same vRtta has different
yati scheme as propounded by different lAkshaNikas. People
like kshEmEMdra (suvRttatilaka) have written on how to use
particular vRttas in particular situations. SikhariNi, for example,
must be used to describe Ojas. Some vRttas when imported
to other languages change their yati positions, e.g., pamcacAmara,
SikhariNi, etc. By the way, if there are interested people here,
there is a yahoo group dedicated to Telugu ChaMdassu. It is
always the privilege of the guy who first explains the vRtta to
name it. Some of the metres I had the privilege to name are:
kuMdamAla, aSOka, madhuragIti, nartakIgIti, navakalika,
paMcamukhi, saptaparNi, sarasvatImanOhari, trivENi,
