Tobacco is a new world (origin in the Americas) plant
imported to India within the last 400 years or so. The
words is of Caribbean or South American aboriginal
origin and travelled to the rest of the word from the
Spanish.
The word would have been co-opted by speakers of
modern languages into their Sanskrit compositions.
Such words are often Sanskritized in a fanciful
manner. (Tangentially, someone Sanskritized the
foreign word Alexander to alakshhyendra! = the
untargettable indra, maybe? -- in any case, such
back-Sanskritizations will not be unique.)
Apparently other than tamAla and kalaJja, there is
also a Sanskritization as "tAmrakUTa" -- it is rather
a stretch to think of tobacco as ruddy or coppery!
If you happen to have the other two quarters of the
verse, (the verse as quoted seems to be anushhTup, but
has only two pAdas), we would know whether this
meaning would make sense.

it is anuShTup but not a shloka.
