I know neither who hari-kAnta-mishra is nor the
importance of hayagrIva, yet I give my opinion only
with respect to the grammar.
Here hari-kanta-mishra's explanation is reasonable,
and, I believe, correct.
Here the verb root is A+sthA
meaning "maintain well" or "ascend"
Taking a clue from "vidhatse" in the same verse, we
can assume that the subject is "you=hayagrIva".
"You ... maintained your sacred-magical body in the
fire", in this past tense form,
So either the laN^, luN^ or liT forms were expected.
However, the poet, considering the vedic forms to be
rarely grammatical for usage in non-vedic composition,
used the ancient grammatical form "kvasu" instead of
the expected "liT". (that is why hari-kAnta-mishra
says "chAndasA api kvacid bhAShAyAm". (NOTE: This is
vedic STYLE. kvasu is quite acceptable in non-vedic
language in other contexts.)
So
A+sthA+liT (in vedic form) becomes
A+sthA+kvasu -> -> AtasthivAn as explained by
hari-kAnta-mishra
It appears that the meaning is
"hayagrIva, you maintained well your sacred-magical
body... in the fire..."
