vipassana: it is distortion of a sanskrit word, in either praakrit or
paali language (dialects of sanskrit).
I don't know the original root.
Maybe our sanskrit list members can help.

I believe the word asked is 'vipassanA' which means 'introspection, insight
that totally purifies the mind' ( Ref: Vipassana Meditation by William Hart,
Harper and Row Publishers). It is a pali word..
I believe it is the adaptation of the sanskrit word:
vipashyanA (vi-pashyati +anA (lyuT krit termination) meaning Correct insight

That doesn't sound right, grammatically.
The root for pashya is "dR^ish" so shouldn't 'ana' be added to it
instead?
Can you give examples of similar usage?
