There have been some messages recently regarding the
origin of the word "agrahAra".
Brief web research suggested that agrahAra land grants
were made in Bihar and Bengal during the Gupta period
(5-6th century AD, before the birth of Mohammad, the
founder of Islam).
Most of the websites were derivative, however one
seemed credible: An original sanskrit + English
translated copperplate of such a land-grant in
Gunaighar (current Bangladesh).

The website is of the Buddhist library and museum,
National Taiwan University. The original text is
apparently from The Indian Historical Quarterly Vol
6:1, 1930.03 pp. 45-60
It would then be anachronistic to look for a
Muslim-invasion explanation for the term "agrahAra".
Also, though a Tamil-derived word could travel to
Bihar/Bengal, it is less likely to have been so.
