I'd like to share with you all, a beautiful piece of sanskrit poetry by
Kalidasa and seek your help in understanding its meaning.
To make the discussion more organized, I'll post one Sloka a week
as a quiz. Please send me word-to-word and overall meanings
(not to the mailing list) by next tuesday. I'll post all answers on
wednesday.
It is in aSva-dhATI vR^itta. It's supposed to have the gait of a horse.
You can listen to Sri Madugula Nagaphani Sarma's beautiful rendition of the
entire stuti in mp3 at the following website:

m^RiNaalaH = root of the lotus flower
m^Ridu = soft, tender or delicate
doH = forearm
lataa = creeper plant
Hence m^RiNaalam^Ridudorlata would mean:
The forearm resembling a creeper which is delicate like the root-stalk of the
lotus flower.
lalita means just a woman or a playful woman. It also refers to a form of
shakti (durgaa). There are various other derivative meanings for which one may
consult the 'Lalita sahasranaamaM'.

Hello Everyone
I am new member to this list.
I am a sanskrit enthusiast with specific interest in the learning the
vocabulary of scientific terms.
I am also interested in philosophical observations in ancient texts.
I am looking for some references of books , or specific hymns etc on
anything that would be a good starting point to learn. I am starting
to polish my sanskrit reading/writing /understanding skills after
many many years

Sai, here is a pdf that has the exact shlokas. However, I found out that
there is marked difference in the way the shlokas are pronounced in the mp3
and what's written in the pdf. Probably it might be due to my strong north
Indian accent (??)

IIRC this is the spontaneous poem that kalidas recited when goddess kali
granted him gyan/vidya. Please correct me if I am wrong.

As you said, there are many differences in the sanskrit.gde.to version
and what Sri Madugula Nagaphani Sarma sang. However, his version
matches better with the text sent to me yesterday by Sri Desiraju Hanumantha Rao
mahodaya. I'm going to follow that and correct the sanskrit.gde.to
version accordingly, since Sri Madugula is a sanskrit scholar and
avadhani, and he cannot make mistakes.
