Dear Mr Vikram
In UdyOogaparvam sarga 17-13
The verse as given in Gitapress is
yasmAt pUrvaiH kR^itaM rAjan brahmarShibhiranuShThitam .
aduShTa.n dUShayasi me yaccha mUrdhnyaspR^ishaH padA ..
You have dissolved the sandhis and substituted 'brahma' in place of the
vocative 'rAjan'(addressed to NahuSha). No problem here.
My question relates to the resolution of 'mUrdhnyaspR^ishaH' as :
mUrdhni + aspR^ishaH which would mean 'on the head' + 'not touched'
i.e., one who was not touched on the head.
In my opinion this should be treated as a compound:
mUrdhanya + spR^ishaH which is a samaanaadhikarNa bahuvIhi and means:
one who on the head (mUrdhanyaH) got touched(spR^shaH) i.e., agastya

namaste rAma,
For the root spR^ish [6 parasmaipadi - tudAdi] the
anadyatanabhUte la~N form for 2nd person singular is aspR^ishaH = you touched.
Your translation of aspR^ishaH given below as "not touched" is in-correct.
Therefore the further interpretation of that sa.ndhi as a samAsa and
associating that with Sage agastya is not right either.
mUrdhni + aspR^ishaH = mUrdhnyaspR^ishaH = you touched on the head
Regarding the other version of this shloka:
The original edition of this Mbh sarga is obtained from
http://www.hscc.net/mahabharata/txt/05.txt
The Gita press edition variant of this sholka was also reviewed and the orginal
shloka was retained here as there is no significant difference in the content.
