Namaste,
Are there any sanskrit slokas which explain the
significance of birthdays. I am guessing that since
the concept of birthdays is relatively new, there is a
very remote possibility of finding them in old books.
If anyone has come across such slokas written by
scholars in the last few centuries, then it would be
very helful to me.

Here is an example usage of icchantaH:
SAntim icchantaH, virodhAH sandhim kR^itavantaH
^^^^^^^^^
wishing peace, the enemies made a treaty.
^^^^^^^
sukham icchan, patnyA saha kadApi vivAdam na karomi
wishing happiness, I never argue with my wife.
I don't know the english grammatical term to describe the above usage, but
I hope the examples clarified the meaning. Perhaps our
sanskrit mailing list members could help.

Regarding passive voice (karmaNi prayoga) and atmanepada, where is the
confusion? Did you find a word which is the same in its
atmanepada and passive voice forms?
budhyate (passive) = is taught
bodhayati (parasmai) = teaches
don't know the atmane form of budh.
bhavAn vandyate (passive) = you are saluted
aham vande (atmane) = I salute

"icchantah" in Bhag. Gita 8.11. What effect does this have on the
verb? Does it become a passive, or maybe an adj.? I've noticed this
often and can't find anything on it in my text books.
