If anybody wants to unsubscribe from the mailing list,
please do *NOT* send mail to the mailing list.
Instead, go to

and follow the instructions to unsubscribe.
Not everybody is interested in knowing that you're unsubscribing.
Please don't spam everybody like this.

The Cologne version of Monier-Williams' dictionary is very handy, but also very
messy with its { and } and other signs.
Members may not know that there is a very beautiful edition of MW, available
online at this URL:
http://students.washington.edu/prem/mw/mw.html
It is in the "standard" transliteration [using accent marks and dotted
letters], rather than the Harvard-Kyoto system used by Cologne. Long entries
are bulleted, making it much easier to find a particular definition.

I cannot find any good source on this question of <naciketa> nachiketa or
<naciketas> nachiketas, and hope my learned Sanskrit friend bgthattey will have
something to say.
I would conjecture that it has something to do with the noun <keta> "desire,
will, intent", with the addition of a desiderative <ci> prefix. But the
construction does not follow any rules that I know. Still, if <ciketa> meant
"desirous", it would not be unusual to prefix <na-> instead of the usual <a->,
and Nachiketa would become "Desireless"---a good quality for an Upanishadic
hero.
---
And let me add my request for good sources for the Shaiva Agamas.
----
And would somebody please explain the deluge of Unsubscriptions? I have had
no problem of spam, for example; but maybe I have a good filter.
Please don't unsubscribe, friends; I love to read your input.

Thank you for the reference. I was responding to the query from an old saying
about asidhaaraavratam I remember from long time ago. May be a little sketchy:
1. yatraikashayanasthaapi-pramaado nopabhujyate, asidhaaraavrata.m naama
vadanti munipu~NgavaaH.
2. shayane madhye khaDga.m nidhaaya striipu.msauyatra brahmacharyeNa svapataH
tadasidhaaraavratam.
Unfortunately, I can't give you the exact reference.

This is a guess:
because you do not use an easy transliteration, I'm not sure if I have the
words down right. I have put your version into HK, where the letters have a
one-to-one or two-to-one correspondence to the devanAgarI:
1. yatra eka-zayana-sthA api pramAdaH na upabhujyate, asidhArAvrataM nAma
vadanti muni-puGgavAH
2. zayane madhye khaDgaM nidhAya strIpuMsau yatra brahmacaryeNa svapataH tad
asi-dhArAvratam.
yatra where eka- one zayana-sthA lying down api pramAdaH pleasure na not
upabhujyate enjoys, asidhArAvrataM cut of the sacrificial knife nAma namely
vadanti muni-puGgavAH the bull Munis
zayane lying madhye upon khaDgaM a sword nidhAya placed strI-puMsau woman-man
yatra where brahmacaryeNa by Brahman study; sexual continence svapataH
self-fallen tad asi- sacrificial knife dhArA- to bear? vratam task.
Kale's Grammar quotes "The Yavana Greeks eat while lying down" <zAyana> or
<zayana>.
I think we are talking about the Sword Bridge of the Upanishads and Vedanta,
and would translate:
Where you lie down and don't enjoy it, the Bull Munis call it <asidhArAvrata>.
Lying upon a sword between a guy and gal, that is the task for a continent
Brahmachari!
I hope to hear arguments from my Sanskrit friends.
