(please post and/or pass on to others)

The Midwest Academy, a 30-year-old national training institute for
progressive direct action organizing, will hire 15 community organizing
interns for a ten week program from January 5 through March 12, 2004.
The stipend is $2750, and will be paid biweekly. Interns will receive
intensive training and mentoring, and will be assigned to work with
statewide organizations in Tampa, FL; Albuquerque, NM; Denver, CO;
Madison, WI; and Nashville, TN. Preference will be given to applicants
already living in these cities, in school there, or with family there.
Housing is NOT included.

Interns will spend the first week of the internship in the Midwest Academy
five-day training program (see training agenda on website,
www.midwestacademy.com). They will learn how organizers choose issues,
develop strategy, assess their own organizational power and that of their
target and opponents, recruit constituents, and move into action. (All
costs for the training, including transportation to Chicago and room and
board during the training are covered.)

Interns will be placed with USAction affiliates in the above cities (see
website, www.usaction.org) will receive a challenging work assignment
which will include serious responsibilities and the opportunity to make a
real contribution to progressive social change. During the Winter 2004
Internship, we anticipate that interns will conduct community outreach and
organize public hearings on the issue of affordable prescription drugs.
Interns will receive day-to-day supervision from their placement
organizations, and ongoing training and mentoring from Midwest Academy
staff. For interns who are interested in pursuing a job in community
organizing, we will also provide job search assistance at the end of the
internship or upon college graduation.

We are looking for young people who are ready to work hard and take on new
challenges and responsibility, who have a passion for social justice, and
who want to learn solid skills in the field of community organizing. We
are particularly looking for people who want to explore a career in
organizing. We are unable to offer college credit, but will work with you
and your institution if you can earn credit there. We will also hire
recent grads, canvassers, and others.

Some assignments will require interns who speak Spanish; many assignments
will require use of a car.
