: Director, Asian American Resource and Cultural CenterOverview:
The Director of the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC) is a 100% administrative position in the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). AARCC is a new unit, to be established upon the appointment of its Director. The Center will join an existing cluster of cultural and diversity centers, including the African-American Cultural Center, the Latino Cultural Center, the Office of Women�s Affairs, and the Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns. The Center will serve UIC students, UIC faculty and staff, and surrounding communities. The Center and its Director will report to the Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.The University of Illinois at Chicago is a major research institution with a budget of $1.25 billion (2002-03) and a total enrollment of 25,690 (Fall 2002). It has a very diverse student body, ranked 6
th in terms of campus diversity among national universities with doctoral programs in the latestUS News ranking, with Asian Americans comprising the largest minority group. Its Fall 2002 undergraduate enrollment of 16,542 includes 9.5% Black, 16.2% Hispanic and 24.1% Asian/Pacific Islander.
Asian American students are active on campus at UIC. There are 20 student organizations. Also, the Chancellor has a Committee on the Status of Asian Americans which serves the academic, social, cultural and professional welfare of Asian American students, faculty and staff. To boost its offering of Asian American courses, UIC hired two new faculty members in the area of Asian American studies in 2002. It is working to develop a minor in Asian American Studies. As the University of Illinois at Chicago strives to develop and enhance its diversity, the Asian American
Resource and Cultural Center will play an important role in policy formation, service and advocacy.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the Director include:�
Development and operation of cultural and educational programming to promote awareness of and appreciation for Asian American cultures;�
Development and operation of services to support the academic needs of Asian American students;�
Coordination with Asian American student organizations;�
Coordination with the Chancellor�s Committee on the Status of Asian Americans;�
Coordination with academic departments and faculty to provide opportunities andresources for UIC students to study Asian American culture and society;
�
Coordination with other directors of cultural and diversity centers on common goals and interests;�
Promoting UIC�s Great Cities commitment by serving as a liaison between the campus community and Asian American community organizations in the metropolitan Chicago area and beyond.Qualifications:
Masters degree or doctorate; and demonstrated experience in

providing leadership in working with Asian American issues� working with student organizations and mentoring/advising students
�
developing and conducting a variety of educational programming;�
organizing and supervising an office of salaried and volunteer staff�
working effectively with faculty, staff and administration�
working on community relations and external fund-raisingSalary
: Negotiable, commensurate with qualifications and experience.Starting Date:
