Hate Crime Hearing -- March 2, 2004, 9:30 a.m.

2650 South California, Room 208 -- Judge Diane Gordon Cannon

WE NEED YOUR PRESENCE in a case where four South Asian men were kicked and beaten with
beer bottles in November 2002.

The victims were attacked outside a nightclub on Chicago's near west side. The two
attackers asked the victims if they were Taliban and told them to go back to their own
country. The assailants punched and kicked the victims rendering two of them
unconscious. One victim required two surgeries to treat a shattered cheekbone and
nerve damage, necessitating an implant to rebuild his orbital bone. The other victim
required eight stitches to close the cut on the back of his head.

One of the defendants, Joseph Gutierrez, pled guilty on January 15, 2004, resulting in
probation and community service. The second defendant, George Petroski, has a hearing
scheduled on March 2, 2004.

We believe Joseph Gutierrez should have been given jail time because of the severity
of the battery or the nature of the hate crime charge. We are fearful that if George
Petroski enters a plea on March 2, he will be treated in a similar manner.

Itis important to demonstrate our concern that law enforcement must act appropriately
to protect our community.
