The South Asian Progressive Action Collective (SAPAC) are proud to present the third annual Voices of Resistance show this (Saturday March 6th).
We will be showcasing work that speaks to all of the faces, experiences and the perspectives of the South Asian Diaspora. The venue includes space for video screenings, visual art, and installation work in addition to our evening of spoken word and musical performances by South Asian artists. We envision using art in this space as a powerful means of social commentary that allows us to empower and transform in ways ordinarily impossible through other mediums. Saturday March 6th @ 7pm At the Insight Arts gallery space, 3rd Floor - United Church 1545 W. Morse Ave. (Morse and Ashland) Suggested donation $5-10 We hope to see you there. Also, please forward this friends and family. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ VOR3 is cosponsored by Insight Arts and the event will be held Saturday, March 6, 2004 at the Insight Arts gallery space. Insight Arts is in the United Church of Rogers Park, corner of Morse and Ashland Avenues in Chicago's north Rogers Park. Our last VOR was a great success - more than 100 people came to hear a variety of spoken-word and performance artists from within Chicago's South Asian community. This is a great opportunity to see art and performances that are organized by and feature young Desis of all backgrounds. This year will showcase art that touches on otherness, art that is not only grounded in our own histories of displacement and migration, but also speaks to how we treat the other among us. When we look around us, at the killing of Muslims in Gujarat, the burning of Hindu families in Bangladesh, hate crimes and racial profiling here in the US, and the ongoing war on Iraq and Afghanistan-we see ourselves and our communities as both the perpetrators and the victims of violence against the other. Other themes addressed in our work in the past years: - Building bridges of understanding to counter the hatred of communalism; - Combating detention, deportation and the loss of civil rights here in the US; - Understanding the dynamics of globalization and responding through global action; and - Speaking out about and against continuing US Militarism. See you there and please spread the word!
