: : <<Please Forward>> : : Assalamu Alaikum, : : I am currently leading a team of outreach workers on Chicago's Southwest Side. I would like to take this time to inform everyone about an event that we are planning during Cease Fire Week. This year, we will be hosting a 24 hour reading against violence. We are looking for people who would like to assist with the organizing, or may have some positive poetry/ music/ comedy that they would like to perform on that day. : The actual date is tentative, but will be around June 5th. : : It is really important for the Muslim community to get involved if at all possible for several reasons. Primarily as our obligations to struggle toward good, but also in recognition that inner-city Muslims have been directly effected by violence, as both the aggressors and the victims. Finally, inshaAllah by doing what we can to assist with the tragedies that go on closest to us every day, we can begin to see change that can have an impact on all of the communities that matter to us, both here and abroad. : : We are having a meeting Tuesday, May 4th at 3 PM at Cease Fire to discuss the event and other ways to get involved and everyone is invited. Also, tell others you know to go to the meeting, or to support this event. We are in need of business sponsorships, volunteer groups, letters of support and more. There is no limit to the way you can get involved. : : The address of the new Cease Fire office is 2440 W. 63rd St. We are on the second floor over the alderman's former office. : : If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call me at 773-401-7187 : : Ma Salaam, : : Rafi (Hugh) Peterson : Chicago Project for Violence Prevention : Project: Cease FIRE : : : CeaseFire Chicago was formed in 1995 as an initiative of The Chicago Project for Violence Prevention. CeaseFire Chicago is a strategic public health initiative to support accelerated community-based organizations that take the lead in developing comprehensive strategic plans to reduce violence. An Advisory Board and a Steering Committee comprised of criminal justice, health, religious and civic leaders provide support, develop strategies and leverage government and private resources for CeaseFire Chicago and its partners. : : The mission of CeaseFire is to work with its community, city and county partners in order to reduce killings in all forms. This includes killings related to youth violence, gang violence, family and partner abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault and rape and child abuse. : : : CeaseFire Chicago is a partnership between community-based organizations, residents, clergy, law enforcement, business and civic leaders, and corporate and philanthropic organizations. Together, these diverse groups focus on a single goal: to reduce violence in all forms in targeted CeaseFire Zones within Chicago. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
