Yes!i would like to ask if it would be ok for me to use sapdb as the development/testing database as it looks like it could fit the bill.
You are encouraged to use SAP DB for whatever you want to, it is 100% Free (in the FSF sense of the word:<http://fsf.org>) this means that, yes, you can use it for whatever you want to, you can sell it to whoever you want, you can copy it all you want to.
You can download and change the source code and sell the results.
the client doesnt want to have any hidden suprises (and im not a lawyer)There aren't any, go and read the license:
when using sapdb.
http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html
Quick points:
1) As long as you don't change the source to sapdb or do anything that means that you need to re-compile it, there is nothing more to think about, do whatever you like! You can even ship sapdb on your distribution medium:

In addition, mere aggregation of another work not based on the Program with the Program (or with a work based on the Program) on a volume of a storage or distribution medium does not bring the other work under the scope of this License.
--Quote--
2) If you change the sapdb source or link your code directly to the sapdb engine AND distribute the resulting work then you need to grant your customers the same rights as you have been given wrt. the sapdb-derived work (but not the rest of your work or your first-born).
3) YOUR application will never be affected by the license that sapdb is under, for evidence look no further than Oracle being available on Linux (which is licensed under GPL) and that Oracles license is the same as it has always been.
4) There is nothing in the GPL that "infects" *your* work, this is an evil rumor being spread by Microsoft to scare people from using GPL'ed software.
That doesn't matter, you can ship sapdb with your product if you want to, in fact if you are going to develop using sapdb why not just dump that proprietary system and increase the profit margin.the final release of the software would not include sapdb in the packaging.
You can buy a service contract for sapdb, but I've found that support from this list is most exelent...
We have been running Linux (GPL'ed) and SAP DB (GPL'ed) on our production server since day one and we are very happy with the freedom (complete), the price (0), the stability (very close to 100%), performance (exelent) and features of both.
