Subject: RE: [Off Topic] JDBC driver for R/3
If there is something like a JDBC driver for the data access
to or from R/3 ?
This would be much easier to handle, since R/3 has already
built-in support
for various database products. Does such a driver exist ?
No. There is a project underway to provide the functionality of ABAP's
OpenSQL to Java programmers (common SQL syntax, caching of values). This
will access the databases directly, so I don't know if this will be for SAP
internal use only or if it will be part of a mySAP development kit.
IMHO, question was about R/3 access from external Java :-)

JCo
Hi Dmitry,
to clear the intention of my question: Daniel got it right.
Some time ago in Walldorf in the BAC coffee corner I heard
two developers discussing data access from Java to R/3 .
The Java application should be usable in stand-alone mode
using a separate JDBC database or as add-on to a R/3 module.
One option is to have a JDBC driver mapping the database calls
via RFC using JCo to the OpenSQL interface in R/3 . By using
the R/3 data access your data can be used in R/3 too for ABAP
code, or for integration with the R/3 transport system. And
you can use the DDICT tools for the "database" administration.
Another benefit is that R/3 hides some differences in the
underlying databases so that there is a more homogenous
SQL view from the Java side.
Since our next product has the same requirements this so
called "R/3 JDBC driver" would give us an easy way to
common data usage in Java and ABAP.
If there is no such driver maybe we will develop this thing.
The required skills in Java, BAPI programming and ABAP is
present, but we are short on time.
Sincerely,
Dirk Zttl
