Hi,
we have a rather large VB application running on top of SapDB and we have a
lot of pain with it... VB might be good for small applications but for
large ones, the lack of complete objects support make life very difficult
for developpers. Remember there is no inheritance and inner objects in VB.
Because of this, the cost of maintaining and upgrading the application is
rising.
In order to get out of this mess, we will start migrating the application
to Java EJB (Jboss) using a VB-Corba-Ejb bridge. We will gradually port the
business logic to Java EJB and we will eventually also port the user
interface to Java. In my mind, Java is a much cleaner language than VB. You
also have amazingly good IDEs like Eclipse (free) and jBuilder.
Sincerely,
Yves Trudeau

Subject: Advice on Visual Basic with SAP DB Project
Hi,
I am currently working on a project to develop a
software package for an Accountants practice. The
software will be closed source. I would be much
greatful if you could clear some of the doubts
given below:
1) This software will be a commercial product
being used by 8-10 accountants simultaneously over
a LAN. Are there any licencing issues that i need
to worry about in terms of paying fees for
installing the Database at my Clients computers
together with my VB application ? The application
will Not be open-source.
2) My preffered choice of developement platform is
to use SAP DB as the backend and Visual Basic as
the front end. Connection through ODBC. However i
am open to other ideas like using Java with JDBC,
etc. Please advise me which option is best and
what are the trade-offs.
3) In developing a data-driven software, my
attitude would be to run the business logic on the
server using triggers and procedures rather than
coding it in Visual Basic. In other words if i
wish to insert a record, i would do it by calling
a stored procedure and passing data values to it
from VB, rather than writing an SQL statement
through VB. Please advise on this. Any
comments/suggestions/experiences would be much
helpful.
4) Does SAP DB have API's for backup routines,
i.e. can i code my application in a way that i
have Backup options on the client and using these
options the server couold be backed up. Is there
any routine/procedure in SAP DB which could be
invoked from VB or Java, etc to do the back-ups.
For now i just have these few doubts. Any help on
the above or other issues you might want me to
consider would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Girish
