I found myself in need of defining a function and did some searching of
the mailing list archives:

Sorry, the current sapdb version does not support any user defined
functions. This will come
with one of the next releases.

Oh my goodness, no. That should never had happened.
Yes, we started implementing functions long ago.
But after a short while we stopped it. Since then things
with higher priority were there, then the decision was made that
user-defined-functions will not be provided by SAP DB.
(Please do NOT start a discussion why and if it wouldn't be nice
to have some. We have had this (discussion) .)
And at any time it was forgotten to destroy that statement
you executed.
Sorry to create some hope and then disappoint you.

Sorry, SAPDB does not support this feature yet and there are no plan to
provide
it in the near future.
However, release 7.4.4 will support user defined functions based on
our stored procedure language.

Thomas

so my question is will there be user-defined functions or not?

also it would be nice to have a roadmap published to know what to expect
in the future.

cheers
