It is no difference from the view of the software installation between SDBINST and SDBUPD. So it is not more or less stable to use SDBINST or SDBUPD. You will get the same software on your computer. But if you are using SDBINST !!! you !!! have to take care that you will do all step to migrate your database. SDBINST installs only the software, nothing else. If you update a database server software directory (aka dependent directory) using SDBINST from 7.3 to 7.4 without preparing all related databases for the migration all these databases will definitively not restart. That's why we suggest to install the database kernel software of version 7.4 in parallel with the database kernel software of version 7.3. when using SDBINST. > Will SDBUPD successfully update a 7.3 installation to 7.4 when only one > database instance is configured? That's what it is made for. But you should know that there is always a chance that the migration fails. Because it is an inplace migration, all data of the database will be lost in this case. That's why SDBUPD want start updating software if there is no backup. But the migration and the risk that the migration fails is the same, if you are using SDBINST or SDBUPD. regards Christoph Bautz, SAP Labs Berlin > Thanks again, > Arne > Bautz, Christoph wrote: > > Hello Arne, > > > > yes, it is a problem.
