Hm, well yes, and it seems that I am the one to find out :-) I'm getting closer, but not quite there yet. I've migrated my database with SDBUPD up to the point of loading the system tables. Then this happened:

> switch database state to ADMIN
> switch database state to ONLINE

One more comment on the Docs:
In the prerequisites for SDBUPD it is not mentioned that you have to do a full data backup in cold state.
Also the x_server has to be running. This item in the docs does not make sense:


- If other SAP DB software installations are present on your host, you must ensure 
that the database instances of these software installations are in the OFFLINE 
operational state, or stop the X Server with the command
dbmcli –d <database_name> -u <userid>,<password> x_server stop
