This I do not understand. I routinely backup and restore between linux
and Win2K with no problems at all. I create the instances manually in
each OS then just do a normal backup/restore on both boxes.

No, backups must have been created on the same architecture. There are
some finer points, but machines with different endianess will definitely
not work.
The Loader is the right tool for this task.
