Seems that SAPDB 7.4 for Linux is out of beta (is that true?). Since I have not got a functional 7.3 installation yet, should I somehow remove SAPDB 7.3, and install 7.4? The SAPDB site (http://www.sapdb.
org/7.4/sap_db_linux.htm) says 7.4 is tested on SuSE 7.3; does that mean that attempting to install 7.4 on RedHat 9 is a risky proposition?

SAPDB 7.4 is out of beta. I always use the SDBINST-program/script and not the RPMs, since it is more flexible in my eyes (i also don't like RPM that much).
I can't imagine any problems installing the pre-compiled SAPDB version - although there might be some issues depending on glibc and other stuff.
Compiling the source from scratch is a difficult task, and i wouldn't like to do that.

What is the best way to remove my 7.3 installation? Is it as simple as stopping the SAPDB services and then deleting everything in /var/opt/sapdb and /opt/sapdb? Is there a reliable script that can do this for me?

You can just run SDBINST and it will upgrade all you stuff. You must backup you database prior to running SDBINST. You can also have both installed: the 7.3 kernel and the 7.4 kernel.
