That is correct and I have never noticed as I always have Exim running anyway :) However, Exim is the Debian default MTA but you could just install any other package satisfying the MTA requirement. I often use Nullmailer on Desktop machines and it works well. The only config I ever do with Nullmailer is enter the smarthost name in the file /etc/nullmailer/remotes.
