@Bob: Variants let me build the visual display exactly as I wanted it.
What I've got now looks as I want, but it's a bit lame. Fixed strings in the product option groups mean that a price change would have to be made in two places, and that separate products that come in the same packaging must have distinct product option groups if their prices (ever) differ. Obvious penalties for a DRY violation. I'll work on code (templatetag?) that will generate the product option text dynamically later. Good enough for now. @Bruce: Yes, exactly. As long as I don't display stock levels to the customer, I can just set the variations' levels to some high value and keep resetting it whenever they could be affected. The truth is the variations don't have stock levels. Only the master inventory counts. Thanks for detailed guidance on the listeners, and some new info.
