If I wanted to go for the former approach how could I amend the category search so that it returned results for all child categories? If you assigned "The Time Machine" to all three categories then that is how it would be displayed. Links to the sub-categories would then act like a filter. This is probably the opposite of how I would want to display them (for a large number of products).
