I get that, but the point is: if you dont understand, it is probably because
you simply dont need this, and so dont need to understand, unless it is not
marked as optional.
For instance, understanding what is PAM login frankly goes beyond was could
be written in a conffile. First, we are no PAM experts so there are good
chances that we write somethings not 100% true, which would be not nice at
all, and finally, nobody cares and people may even thinks they need to learn
that when they want to use Savane, while almost no one need to learn a thing
about PAM, unless he wants to implement somekind of interface between Savane
accounts and accounts of another system, like AFS, which makes sense only in
big organizations where they are persons well familiar with the "another
system" like AFS.
